Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off Review

February 26, 2019

Hi guys, today I’ll be sharing about one of my favourite scrubs: Skinfood’s Black Sugar Scrub Wash Off.

This post is actually an update because I already posted about this product before, but since it really is one of my fave products, I thought I'd feature it again.

As I’m writing this, Skinfood is currently not active and is no longer producing new stock T.T Back in October 2018, Skinfood filed for legal receivership in order to prevent the company's bankruptcy. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to 100% shut down (because they are looking for help), but with the way things are, it's very likely that they will. It was reported that they fired a lot of employees without prior notice in Korea, and its likely that more employees will be let go + shops will be closing down (both in Korea and overseas). If you access their main Korea website, you'll be greeted by an error message as well.

In this post, I'll be sharing why I really like this scrub + where you can still get it!

WHAT IS IT
This product is a sugar scrub/exfoliator that helps remove thick, dead skin cells. Its mineral and vitamin contents effectively revitalizes the skin as well.

WHERE TO BUY
This product is still available in select open Skinfood shops in Seoul. My friend Syd was in Korea last year, and she said they were selling the scrubs by bulk, but they weren't cheap/discounted.

I used to get mine from Althea Korea for only RM20. If you check my previous post, I bought it for RM20. The last time I made a purchase was November 2018, and it's surprising that they haven't changed price ever since.

Unfortunately, the product has now been taken down from Althea's app & site. It has been out of stock on Hermo for a while as well:

The onle ones I could see online still selling it was iHerb & Sokoglam (for a much more expensive price compared to Althea T.T).

PACKAGING
The product comes in a 100g tub with a brown paper on top. This is actually the old packaging, and the new packaging was release last year (pretty similar, only different paper material).

On the side there's info in both English and Korean:

It comes with a plastic cover:

INGREDIENTS
The ingredient list is super clean, and its paraben free, sulfate-free, alcohol-free, silicone-free, EU Allergen free & fungal acne safe.

I've never been irritated by this product, and I find that my acne prone skin does not react negatively as well.

TEXTURE & FRAGRANCE
This product has a paste-texture with sugar granules in it:

The sugar granules aren't the largest, nor are they sharp at all. I find that they're the perfect size to scrub my face + don't dissolve too fast when I start using it as well.

HOW TO USE
I usually use this product after cleansing my face while I'm still in the shower (and my face is still damp):

I scoop some out carefully, making sure that no water enters the tub:

I then apply a thin layer all over my face:

Followed by scrubbing my face in a circular motion:

The sugar granules do a great job of exfoliating my skin, and although some sugar granules dissolve, not all of them totally do:

It doesn't make my skin red/irritate any pimples I may have too. After scrubbing it for around 30 seconds, I then rinse it with water (in the shower).

MY REVIEW AND VERDICT
I think this product is a must-have, and that you should try it at least once in your life! It's a great exfoliator that makes my skin soft, removes any dead skin cells from my face, and I think that its a nononsensee product that gets to the point and does what it claims to do well. I did notice that it cannot melt the super tiny blackheads on my nose, but aside from that, it does a pretty good job of conditioning my skin, making it soft and supple for the next steps of my skincare routine.

I usually exfoliate my face once a week, and even liberally, one tub can last me 2-3 months. You don't really need a lot to scrub your face, so it lasts for quite a while. It's affordable, works great and lasts long, what else can I ask for?

WILL I REPURCHASE
I hope that Skinfood will make a comeback soon so that I won't have to hoard this product in bulk! If they don't recover from their situation, I'll continue to hunt for good deals and keep hoarding them as backups ahahaha. It's so good that I don't even want to find a replacement/alternative product!

Aaaand that's it for this post! I hope I inspired you to go out and to try it out, it really is a fabulous product.

See y'all in the next post!
