The Face Shop Jeju Aloe 99% Fresh Soothing Gel Review

August 25, 2015

Hello everyone! Today's post will be a review of The Face Shop's Jeju Aloe 99% Fresh Soothing Gel!

If you follow Korean trends in both beauty and fashion (even K-pop), you'll find that Aloe Vera gel is a very popular product used by celebrities, gurus and normal people alike. The most famous one among all the aloe vera gels in the market would be Nature Republic's, which I have reviewed before (click here to view review).

As my huge tub is almost finished I decided to get another tub, but this time from another brand. Hence today's review! If you guys are interested in reading more about my acne skincare routine (2018), please check out my latest post about The Face Shop's Dr. Belmeur Lines too! ^^

So without further ado, let's begin!

*Disclaimer: I bought this product with my own money and was not paid to make this post ^^ This is my honest review!*

WHAT IS IT

This product is formulated with 99% aloe barbadensis leaf extract from Jeju Island which soothes and moisturizes the skin. It can be used for various purposes such as moisturizing, soothing, as a facial pack and as an after-sun care. This product comes in a gel form and its suitable for every skin type, especially people with oily skin (like me!). If you have oily skin, I suggest to have aloe vera on hand, no matter the brand.

On the back of the tub it says that it leaves no sticky residue behind. It is formulated WITHOUT paraben, benzophene, animal oil, mineral oil and artificial colouring. I'm curious though, why is it 99% aloe vera gel and that 1 percent consists of so many other ingredients :O

WHERE TO BUY?

You can find this product at any The Face Shop outlet. The 300ml tub retails at RM21.90 and I don't know if its a new product, but when I purchased it, it had a buy one free one promotion! RM22 for 300ml of product is veeeeery cheap, compared to Nature Republic. Plus, it's buy one free one so it comes out only RM11 per tub! It's a very worth it deal that you can easily share with your siblings or friends. I shared my other tub with my mum ^^

brown_and_conys_cozy_winter_date-6

PACKAGING

The packaging is similar with other brands' aloe vera gel. There are a few new ones that I saw came in tube form. The tub to me just seems a bit unhygenic right now but for that much amount of product, I'm not complaining!

New tubs come sealed and there's another plastic lid inside.

INGREDIENTS

As mentioned above, this product it is formulated WITHOUT paraben, benzophene, animal oil, mineral oil and artificial colouring. In that 1% out of the 99% of aloe vera gel, there is alcohol which I thought everyone should just know is in it.

And on a side note, I found this ridiculous question online if the alcohol in Nature Republic's aloe vera gel is halal. Like seriously? Alcohol doesn't just mean alcohol for consumption! learn your basic chemistry please hahaha

TEXTURE & FRAGRANCE

This product it transparent in colour and has a gel texture, slides well and absorbs pretty well. It smells very clean and the scent isn't very heavy.

The texture is slightly slimier than that of Nature Republic's gel and I find that it absorbs well but not as fast as the NR one.

After applying an appropriate amount onto the face, it gets absorbed and leaves a thin film of gel onto the face. If you leave this on overnight, the next morning when you wash it off its still there, effectively sealing moisture and other skincare products that you have applied before sleeping!

HOW TO USE

I apply this at night or whenever I'm at home. It can be applied directly onto your bare skin as well! The way I incorporate it into my skincare routine is:

Cleanser - Toner - Soothing -Essence - Lotion - Acne Products - Serum - Moisturizer - Sleeping Mask

I use aloe vera gel as a moisturizer/sleeping mask and as a soothing mask when I break out or after  travelling. As for the soothing mask I apply it after toner to calm my skin from breaking out. This method is great for days when I feel lazy. For moisturizer, I apply it after all my other skincare products. It seals in products quite well!

I dot appropriate amounts of the gel onto five points, my forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. After spreading it absorbs fairly quickly, leaving a thin layer of gel on the skin.

MY REVIEW

This product does a great job of moisturizing, hydrating and soothing skin. It does its main purpose and everything else it claims to be able to do.

This product also didn't irritate my skin, didn't break me out and had a certain amount of control on the shine on my face. I find myself hydrated enough that my bare face has a natural sheen from natural oil, not having any excess.

When you apply it on, it helps seal your products in but just a reminder, you need to know how much product you should apply on your face or else it will be mildly sticky and dust, etc flying around will probably stick onto your face because a thick layer will stay on top of your skin.

When I compared Nature Republic's 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel and The Face Shop's 99% Fresh Soothing Gel, I found a few differences:

1. NR's is thicker while TFS's is slimier

2. NR's absorbs fast, even if you apply a bit too much it will go in. I find that TFS's one doesn't absorb that fast and applying too much will make the gel layer on your face too thick.

3. It delivers the same results at a much reasonable price

MY VERDICT

I definitely LOVE this product. It works perfectly and costs so darn cheap! I remember that one of my first skincare products was NR's Aloe Vera gel and at the time, RM30 was VERY expensive to me. People who want to try this product out won't have to worry about spending a lot. Results wise, the only thing I don't like about it is the stickiness when you accidentally apply too much and that it doesn't absorb as fully as NR's aloe vera gel does.

WILL I REPURCHASE

YES! Its cheap and works like a charm. I would probably repurchase this when it finishes and try out The Face Shop's Bamboo gel as well ^^

  1. I think the reason nature republic "absorbs" faster is because of a higher alcohol content. Because of the alcohol it evaporates faster...

    1. Hi, thanks for commenting! You can choose to put it in the fridge as it will be colder and more soothing (I've tried it before and its really relaxing), but nowadays I just leave it in my room and it works just as well. Its up to you! :)

    1. Hi, thanks for commenting! So far after using this product, I don't think it has any scar fading properties. It can help with hydrating and soothing, but to fade scars, I suggest that you use another product like a spot treatment or a scar fading gel. If you're interested, you can click here (http://hapibaimao.blogspot.my/2015/07/oxy-anti-pimple-mark-gel-whitening.html) to read about the product that I used to fade my acne scars! ^^

  8. It has Triethanolamine.

Triethanolamine is considered a moderate hazard ingredient by the Cosmetics Database, which notes as concerns. According to Cosmetic Ingredient Review, Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics, and the U.S. National Library of Medicine, there is strong evidence that Triethanolamine is a human skin, immune system and respiratory toxicant. One or more animal studies show sense organ effects at very low doses, especially when used around the mouth, eyes and lips, and one or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results. It has been shown to cause bladder and liver cancer, as well as changes in testicles. According to OrganicConsumers.org, Triethanolamine can cause allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time. It can cause itching, burning, scaling, hives, and blistering of skin, all symptoms which may increase with higher concentrations (The Green Beauty Guide).Triethanolamine "should not be used in products containing N-nitrosating agents to prevent the formation of possibly carcinogenic nitosamines."

  10. I think TFS's doesnt absorb that fast as NR maybe because of the contain of aloe vera. As we know TFS's aloe vera is 99% , I have put a mask on my face from the original aloe vera. It absorb a little bit slow and sticky. So TFS still maintain the real quality of aloe vera and they doesnt mixed a lot of other chemicals into the gel ^^

  11. Heyy , that was a great review just wondering , is it okay if i wash it off after applying it on my face and hair for about a few hours ??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, thanks for commenting! For the face, I usually apply this gel at night and sleep with it, and the gel actually absorbs quite fast but it leaves a slightly sticky residue. If you feel that its inconvenient then you can just use a cotton pad with toner to wipe the excess off, no need to wash again ^^ As for your hair, I would recommend you to wash it off because it can be quite sticky depending on how much gel you put. Hope I helped! :)

  12. After reviewing the list of ingredients I tend to think that this formula is made with 99% Pure Aloe Vera, the overall percentage of Aloe added would certainly be less. Also, the Alcohol, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Rosemary and other botanic ingredients are most likely added as a preservative however I believe they would have to be added at a fairly high concentration for them to be effective. This could cause skin irritation.

  14. Hi! May I ask the comparison of the results of both brands after applying? Does the NR one leave a sticky residue, too? And can I use this as a moisturizer before applying make-up? Thank you. :)

    1. Hi, thanks for commenting! I didn't feel any major differences in terms of results. Both of them just left me really hydrated! I use a bit for moisturizing in the morning but only when I'm at home because of the shiny finish. I never tried using it under my makeup :( If you really want to use it before makeup, I suggest letting the product absorb fully first then wiping off the gel film, followed by a primer then your base. Hope I helped! :)

  15. Hello! It's my first time stumbling across your blog, and I really have to commend you! Your pictures are so clear and HD! You also design your layouts well, simple graphic design, and you have clear writing. I've come across many other beauty product bloggers that, unfortunately, have inexperience with designing things more professionally. So I think it's really cool what you do!

As for a related question to your product review now.. ^^; I've been using the NR aloe for some time now and I've noticed that the moisturizing effect doesnt last that long. I can't imagine how TFS aloe can stay on and moisturize your skin all through out the night :O I tend to layer thin moisturizers all together, including the aloe in order from losing the moisture. So my question is, did you find that the NR one could last during the night for you, like your TFS one could? I'm from Los Angeles, USA, where it's dry heat, so do you think it could be due to a difference in weather?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also! It's funny, around here, the NR aloe ($6.60) is cheaper than TFS aloe ($8). xD;; So that's why I haven't considered trying TFS aloe~ Hahaha ;-;

    2. Hi Arisa, thanks for commenting and thank you so much for the compliments! They really mean a lot to me :) I usually apply a generous amount of gel onto my face (a finger scoop each on my forehead, cheeks nose chin) and the film stays intact overnight. I live in Malaysia where the weather is hot and humid, so it might be the weather. Hmm. Can I ask how long does it take for the gel to fully absorb into your skin and what skin type you have?

PS. I suggest using this gel last if you want to layer it with other moisturizers :)

  16. Hi, I used TFS'product. But as I put it on my face. I feel the burning sensation. Is it normal? It feel so hot as if it burns my face. Or is it because I use it wrong way.
Please advice. I only used twice. How should we apply it actually/

    1. did you buy it at a faceshop outlet or somewhere else? there are a lot of imitations out there, i hope yours is bought where it should be. because it shouldn't be leaving a burning sensation - its supposed to be soothing...

      Delete
    2. Hi Alison, sorry for the late reply 😅 I agree with the anonymous reply above. There are a lot of imitation products that sell for much cheaper than the original products. Did you purchase it in store or online? Is the burning sensation a lot/a little, and does it fade away? 🤔

  17. Aloe vera is very beneficial plant by which you can cure any kind of problem. Whether it is acne, herpes, blemishes and constipation aloe vera is helpful in all problems. You can buy aloe vera gel from any store or if you want you can grow this plant in your backyard. If you drink aloe vera juice on a daily basis you will stay away from lots of internal problems.

  27. Hi thanks for this great review. I have been hesitating to use aloe vera gel for moisturizers as i had used Aloe ha gel from Cathy doll before and it leaves my skin shiny and quite oily. Recently i decided to try TFS aloe because my friend used it before and his complexion seriously improves! He had really bad acne and pimples before. He told me he used this aloe vera gel after cleansing with neutrimatics face wash, skip toner and moisturizer. After quite half a year his pimples all gone..along with acne scars. Im very shocked! So im now using this gel and it does leave a bit sticky feeling after applied...but not as bad as the previous product i used...this suits oily skin more...

    1. Hi accel519, definitely! I find that some aloe gels absorb very quickly into the skin, while some (if you apply too much) will leave a shiny cast. To avoid the shiny cast, try applying the gel little by little!

The gel also really helped out with my breakouts! Its my go-to solution now whenever I have pimples and I want to soothe my skin. Hope I helped! 😊

I've tried using TFS's aloe vera for 2 weeks but it only moisturizes my skin & does not really fade my acne scars even just a little so should I use it longer tosee the effects or should I already see the results within this period of time? btw, i'm using the one in tube since they says that it has the same content

    1. Hi! Although aloe vera gel helps with acne, I do not think it has enough acne fading ingredients to help you combat acne scars and dark spots. I suggest using this to calm the skin and using a vitamin C serum to fade the scars afterwards :) Hope this helps!

    1. Hi Dodo, I've tried that once and although it was okay, I would recommend using a hair treatment product instead. This is because you need quite a lot of aloe gel to cover your hair evenly + the effect is not as good compared to a hair treatment cream/serum/mask. Hope this helps!
