Ponybrown Plus Skin Hue Sebum Control Black Mask Review

August 28, 2018

Hi guys, welcome back to my blog! Today I'll be sharing about Ponybrown Plus's Skin Hue Sebum Control Black Mask.

It's been a while since my last sheet mask post! I try to use sheet masks as often as I can because I feel like they really help condition my skin (especially when I'm traveling or I have a photoshoot).

Ponybrown, originated from Korea, is a K-beauty brand that's new to me, and they're actually a pretty fun and unique brand! Starting out in 2007 with a fun character called Marrife, Ponybrown actually started off as a popular Korean character on various items like stationery and it moved on to develpoing it's own skincare products in 2015.

Some cool tips, not only do the masks differ in ingredients, they also differ in sheet mask material itself! From natural bamboo fiber, natural fruit pulp fiber, natural bamboo charcoal fiber and cellulose fiber, you get quite the variety of textures to choose from depending on your preference.

Aside from their home base in Korea, they're available in other countries in Asia and Europe as well, and they've recently reached Malaysia shores! You can now officially get Ponybrown's sheet masks on their official store on 11Street (click here to check it out!)

Ponybrown recently reached out to me and provided some sheet masks in exchange for a review. As always, I'll be providing my honest review as well as my experience using these masks at work + at home!

Without further ado, let's get started!

The package I received contained 3 types of sheet masks: the Skin Hue Hydrating & Soothing Mask as well as the Skin Hue Sebum Control Black Mask.

The Soothing & Hydrating masks are from the Any Hue range while the Sebum Control Mask is from the Black range. The masks are supposed to be used 3 times a week and should be alternated for maximum effect, meaning you can use the black mask first followed by a coloured mask the next time and repeat the process.

In this post, I'll only be focusing on the Black masks. For my thoughts on the Any Hue mask, click here!

As someone with oily/acne skin, I've strived to be oil free at all times. After a few years of trial and error, I've learned that it's actually better to have a controlled/balanced oil level rather than no oil at all. After using these sheet masks, I'm here to finally update you guys on my experience with it!

Formulated with green tea ferment, lotus flower ferment filtrate + Affipore from South Africa, this mask promises to be a quick and effective pore treatment pack that maintains the skin's oil-water balance, refines pores as well as giving the skin a matte & radiant complexion.

It's recommended to use the masks 3 times a week and should be alternated with other Ponybrown masks for maximum effect.

The ingredients are super clean and are very unlikely to irritate the skin. Olive Leaf extract is one of the top ingredients in this mask, and olive leaf is known to be really good at anti-aging and protecting the skin from pollution. It contains a lot of anti-oxidants too!

By the way, Affipore (the star ingredient of this mask) is a paraben-free patented ingredient that reduces excess sebum.

This mask is back in colour and is made from natural bamboo charcoal fiber. Natural bamboo fiber is great at absorbing dirt and impurities from the skin.

The essence itself is clear in colour and has a light, pleasant smell (nothing too overwhelming). It's not sticky and there's still a lot left in the packet after applying the mask.

First impression with this mask is that it did not smell weird! Because I read that it was made from bamboo fibers, I was expecting it to be slightly funky. However, it was like any other sheet mask I used.

Another thing I noticed is that there is so much juice in this mask! In the gif below, you can see how much juice is left even after 20 minutes:

After I peeled it off, I patted the excess product into my skin it had absorbed.

I also don't suffer from huge pores or anything like that, so I didn't see any visible change, but I did feel like my skin was plump, tight and moisturized. One of the claims that this mask says it has it that it provides matte skin. Right after using the mask I was super wet, and after it had fully absorbed into my skin, it still looked pretty dewy. However, I did notice some slight improvement on my sebum secretion throughout the day. After using 3 of the masks, I realized that my skin wasn't as oily as it was at the end of the day. I wasn't exactly oil free but I did notice some difference in my oil levels.

Aside from that, I find this sheet mask to be quite soothing & hydrating as well! It did not feel heavy & stuffy too. I'd recommend this to people with oily skin like me who want enough moisture in their skin without feeling uncomfortable!

Overall I'd give these masks a 4.5/5 out of 5! It did everything it said would do: moisturize and help with sebum. I deducted the 0.5 because I'd have like a guard/wire gauze or some sort of protection with the mask, but aside from that (very nitpicky detail haha), this mask is really great! I used two on my Penang trip and it was really great at cooling my skin from the hot sun + giving my skin some extra loving to combat the fatigue & stress it was under from traveling.

I recommend these masks to people with oily skin and to those looking to expand their sheet mask stash! Not only do they help moisturize the skin well & help reduce sebum secretion, they're also pretty affordable. For the price they charge (RM40 for a box of 5) it comes to around RM8 each. I've tried masks that are more expensive but didn't give me nice results, so I definitely think these are a steal. Ponybrown also currently has a Merdeka promo where you can get a bundle of 8 pieces for only RM61! 😍🎉 Don't say I bojio!
