Lounge on the Park, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur Whittard Christmas Afternoon Tea Review

November 26, 2019

Hi guys! Today I'm here to share all about Mandarin Oriental KL's Whittard Christmas Afternoon Tea set.

Known for their iconic circle high tea set, Mandarin Oriental recently came out with the Whittard Christmas Afternoon Tea. Although they're known for their unique circle high tea platter, I noticed that they haven't been using it recently like with this new holiday set.

Fun fact, when I first came to KL I was invited for high tea by The Butterfly Project at Mandarin Oriental but I couldn't make it because I missed the invitation haha.

It's kinda sad that I didn't get to go, because since then I've only ever had high tea at Hilton/Majestic and did not get to take a picture with their circle platter haha. Maybe it's because it's similar to Majestic's?

Anyhoo, this year's high tea set is priced at RM148 per person with free flow of tea for up to 2 hours. You can also opt to have a glass of champagne with your free flow tea, and that will cost RM198 per pax.

High tea at Mandarin oriental is served at the Lounge on the Park, and although you can just walk in, I recommend making a reservation to ensure a good seat.

Last year my team from work and I had lunch at Mosaic, which is connected to The Lounge.

At the entrance of The Lounge there was this Christmas tree:

I expected to see a similar tree this year, but they only had a gingerbread carousel on display haha. I'm not sure if it's still to early or if they don't have a tree this year. Kinda weird since the hotel's main entrance + The Lounge already has trimmings + decorations.

By the gingerbread carousel and houses were their selection of cakes that you can order separately:

I had high tea with Tammy, and we managed to move to a bigger table by the windows. I got the high tea set for 1 pax while Tammy got a cappuccino + the cheesecake.

To start, I was asked to choose a tea from their selection of Whittard Teas.

I decided on Coconut Truffle since it sounded interesting + I'd never tried it before.

Next, I was shown a selection of jams for the scones. The selection available was quite big, and I could choose from strawberry, passion fruit, pineapple, blueberry, Mandarin ginger, mango & lime, red fruit curd and pandan caramel.

In the end, I chose Mandarin ginger and passion fruit! I love tangy/sour stuff, and I've never tried a ginger jam before.

The scones offered were candied ginger scones and cranberry scones. I expected the ginger one to taste different, but I didn't really feel like there were any big differences compared to the normal cranberry one.

Paired with the jams, they were simply divine! Both jams were nice, and I highly recommend both jams.

I started on the high tea set from the bottom up. All 4 were pretty okay, but what stood out the most for me was the the roasted turkey, root vegetables, chestnut and aioli mayonnaise.

For the middle tier, all 3 sweets were delectable and satisfied my sweet tooth. I quite liked the coconut & mango choux puff and the Mont Blanc.

Finally for the top! The red velvet Christmas bauble was okok, but the gingerbread mandarin macaron was really nice. I didn't really like the Santa's Hat, and when I asked the staff what it was when she first served it, she didn't really know as well and just said "It's Santa's Hat" lol.

Tammy didn't want to eat the high tea set, so she had a cheesecake:

When I left it was almost 9pm, and there was a band playing:

Overall I think it was still a pretty ok high tea set. The sweets were nice and the savouries were okay. It would have been nice to have more. Would I say it's the best value for money high tea set? Not really. When you look at price + what you get, I think you get more at other hotels. It was a nice tea set and I would not mind having it again. It's just that if you're on a budget, I think that you would enjoy other hotels' tea sets more.

And that's it for this post! Thanks for dropping by my blog, see ya next time!
