Kiehl's Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask Review

May 26, 2020

Hi guys, today I'll be sharing all about the Kiehl's Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask!

I got this mask a few months back and I'm here to finally update you guys with my review. I actually also recently received the brand new Vital Skin-Strengthening Super Serum, and you can read all about that here.

Without further ado, let's get on with the review!

WHAT IS IT
The Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask is formulated with avocado fruit extract, avocado oil and evening primrose oil, promising to give our skin the hydration that it craves. With a unique texture inspired by rich and creamy avocados, this mask melts on the skin and leaves it well-nourished, effectively sealing in moisture.

I remember everyone freaked out when this mask first launched because everybody loves avocados! Even the texture itself is very similar to mushed avocados on avocado toast, so at first glance, everybody just wanted to give this mask a go. Does it live up to its hype though? Read on to find out!

WHERE TO BUY
This mask is available nationwide in Malaysia, but since we're living through a pandemic right now, you can also get it via their official website store.

Available in 2 sizes, you can opt for the 25 grams for RM77 or the full-sized 100 grams for RM190.

Price to size ratio, it's much more worth it to get the full-sized one compared to the mini. This mask is a bit on the pricier side (as are most of Kiehl's products), so that's another factor to consider.

PACKAGING
The tub itself is the same size/style as all of Kiehl's other masks. I love the uniform and monochromatic look of it, and it just looks cool when placed beside their other masks haha.

It initially comes sealed, and I don't know about you guys but I usually like to keep the seals and just leave it inside the tub. Not sure if it helps keep the product fresh or anything, I just always like leaving the seals of tubs in~

Here's a pic I took a long time ago when I first got it:

It looks almost balmy, but it's actually really like mushed avocado when you scoop it out. One thing I felt was missing was a spatula, and although I didn't really need it since I have a lot of spatulas at home + we should really cut down on plastic, I just thought I'd point it out. You can definitely use your fingers, but for hygiene purposes, I always use a spatula.

INGREDIENTS
An analysis of the ingredients shows that it's pretty clean, with mostly green-level EWG level ingredients (with a sprinkling of a few yellow ones). This means the ingredients are unlikely to cause any irritation:

I think that those with very dry skin will love this mask because it contains highly moisturizing ingredients like Glycerin, Evening Primrose Oil and Avocado Oil. Although Kiehl's says it's usable by all skin types, they don't really recommend it to those with oily skin. I think it's because it contains Shea Butter which can potentially lead to clogged pores (Evening Primrose Oil and Avocado Oil might do this as well).

FRAGRANCE & TEXTURE
Once spread I out, it really does look like mushed avocado:

The texture is very smooth, though I feel like you do have to take your time to get it to spread evenly. I don't think you should cover your entire face is mush, because once it melts/spread a thin layer on the skin, I think it's enough.

Although there is a sliiiiiight hint of an avocado smell, the scent actually reminds me more of a normal clay mask. Not as strong, but it does smell like a clay mask.

HOW TO USE
After cleansing, I apply this onto my skin evenly. As I mentioned, it's suitable for all skin types (including sensitive skin), but Kiehl's themselves say that it's not recommended for acne-prone skin (which is what I have haha). Apply it on for 15 minutes and wash off with luke warm water!

Here's what it looks like freshly applied:

And here's what it looks like after 15 minutes (the mask has melted into the skin):

And finally, after washing it off:

MY REVIEW & VERDICT
I think this mask is a great treat for my skin actually, and even though they say that those with oily skin shouldn't use this, I've had no negative effects at all. No breakouts/clogged pores, and I do feel quite hydrated after using it. I also feel like it's pretty smoothening and softening!

I have to admit that I do use it only once a week compared to their recommended 3 times, so maybe that's why it works well for my oily skin. Overall I think it's a nice wash off mask that I would not mind to continue using. It doesn't really feel particularly firming, but it does make my skin feel quite moisturized and refreshed.

WILL I REPURCHASE?
For the price, I would definitely think twice before repurchasing it. It's not the best mask out there, nor is it bad for me at all. I would definitely get it again if there were any discounts/sets available.

And that's it for this review! If you actually purchase the brand new Vital Skin-Strengthening Super Serum, you'll get a sample of this mask as well!
