What to buy & try from Skinfood before they shut down

October 16, 2018

Hi guys, today I'll be sharing with you guys all my top picks from Skinfood + what products I want to try and get my hands on before Skinfood shuts down.

So yesterday reports came out saying that Skinfood recently filed for legal receivership in order to prevent the company's bankruptcy. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to 100% shut down (because they are looking for help), but with the way things are, it's very likely that they will. It was reported that they fired 181 employees without prior notice in Korea, and its likely that more employees will be let go + shops will be closing down (both in Korea and overseas). If you access their main Korea website, you'll be greeted by this:

There are a few reasons why they're closing down, and you can read all about it here. It's kinda sad because Skinfood was one of the first K-beauty brands I was ever introduced to, and they're one of the OGs of K-beauty in general! Plus, you can see how heavily my photography style is inspired by their Instagram. I just love the feel & composition of their shots!

Anyhoo, I know nothing is set in stone, but as someone working in the K-beauty industry, I've heard people saying that Skinfood has already ceased production of products and stock in Korea are already super low. Before every Skinfood product disappears off the face of the Earth, I'd like to share with you guys some of my must-have items (that I will most probably be hoarding in the next couple of weeks) as well as some of the products that I've had my eye on but have yet to try.

1. Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off
(RM20 on Althea.kr)

The iconic sugar scrub. If you haven't tried this, you're not a real K-beauty fan ahahaha. This exfoliator is my absolute fave, and I've easily gone through more than 10 since I first started getting into K-beauty. It exfoliates really well and smells DIVINE. Lemony and fresh! You only need a bit to scrub your entire face, and since exfoliating isn't a daily thing, a tub can last you 2-3 months depending on how you use it. If I could recommend only one thing from Skinfood, it would be this. Holy grail status!

I've tried some of the other masks before and here are my thoughts. The Honey one is nice but I don't like how "dissolved" the sugar already is. It doesn't exfoliate as well as the original but it helps to really hydrate and make my skin soft. The Rice Mask is nice and does its job, good for brightening & hydrating the skin. I've yet to try the strawberry one and the sugar scrub in a tube!

2. Skinfood Avocado & Sugar Lip Scrub

I originally got this from Althea's Superfood box, but after checking today, it's not available on Althea, Hermo or even Stylekorean. I guess they already ceased production or something. This is a great scrub that you only need the tiniest amount to get results. Holy grail status as well!

3. Skinfood Fresh Fruit Lip & Cheek Trio

These are one of the nicest smelling lip products I have. They can double as a blush as well! They're not very hydrating in the long run but the colours are very pretty, especially the #6 Plum which was released for their fall collection last year.

4. Skinfood Peach Cotton Multi Finish Powder
($7.99 on Stylekorean.com)

I got this from Althea's Matte Box but like the lip scrub, it's now not available on both Althea and Hermo. The 15g version is still available on Stylekorean, and it's a pretty nice powder that blurs and sets. It smells pretty nice too, so if you need some powder, grab this jumbo sized one now!

5. Skinfood Choco Eyebrow Powder Cake
($6.24 on Sokoglam.com)

I got this a while back and its a pretty decent brow powder. It's pretty cheap and it was my dupe for the NYX brow cake. Pretty powdery but gets the job done.

As for the products that I wanna try out, first on my list is the Black Sugar Perfect First Serum. There are three variants and The Essential is supposed to be for all skin types, while The Mild was made specifically for sensitive skin while The Light was made for those with normal or oily skin.

I'm very into Vitamin C products, and I've heard some good things about their Water Whitening Yuja Water Whitening Ampoule Serum on Instagram.

I'm not really a fan of honey products but after trying out their Honey Sugar Scrub, it changed my mind a bit. One of their last product launches was actually the Royal Honey Propolis line (they even went to France to take pics and the shots were glorious), and I was quite interested to try out the essence.

I think it was Pony or another K-beauty YouTuber that mentioned the King Edge Puff in a video, and I've been wanting to try it out ever since. It has a unique shape and looks like it would be great at blending concealer and stamping on product.

Skinfood actually has a lot of food-themed products that I've yet to try like their Avocado, Tomato, Peach, Bitter Green, Aqua Grape & more.

I hope some of my recommendations helped you out, and that you manage to get your hands on some Skinfood goodies before they run out!

Till the next post!

  1. Hi Eros! I've tried Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off & Black Sugar Perfect First Serum (back in their very first packaging).. I can remember I really enjoy using the serum and it has this unique "sake" like scent to it.. Sad to hear that they're closing down.. Hope they will recover from this crisis *finger-crossed*
