Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner Review

April 7, 2018

Hi guys, today I'll be sharing about Klairs' newly launched Supple Preparation Unscented Toner!

If you're a fan of K-beauty and Wishtrend, I'm sure you've heard of Klairs' cult fave Supple Preparation toner before. It's a great toner that I personally think would be suitable for all skin types + would recommend to people with oily skin like me. I've had no problems using my toner, but apparently, some people with super sensitive skin experienced irritation because of the essential oils/fragrances included in the toner.

Because of this, Klairs listened to their customers' feedback and have decided to release an unscented version! I really applaud them for this, because although the original supple preparation toner is marketed for everyone (and because its already so popular), they could have just ignored the feedback and continued to sell their product. By releasing a new version, I think it really shows how committed they are to meeting all of their customers' needs + really improving their brand for customers. TL:DR, Team Klairs/Wishcompany, you guys rock!

Klairs was kind enough to send a bottle of the new toner to me to review and share with you guys. Since I haven't tried Klairs' Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion, they were generous enough to send that for me to try out as well! As always, although this product was sent via PR, I was not paid to give a good review + this post contains my 100% honest thoughts/review.

Without further ado, let's get on with the review!

WHAT IS IT?
This product is a toner that promises a burst of hydration without irritating the skin, effectively rejuvenating and restoring the skin.

One of this toner's key features is its fast absorption into the skin. It promises to keep the skin moisturized and to help retain the hydration in the skin for a long time. This toner is supposed to be able to retain moisture by up to more than 20% compared to other toners that contain hyaluronic acid + beta-glucan.

What makes this product different from the original toner is that it does not include essential oils, making it scent free. Essential oils are great for lots of different reasons, but according to SkinCarisma, essential oils may be harmful to some people with sensitive skin. Klairs recommends using the unscented version if your skin is sensitive to scents, and they recommend getting the original one if you don't mind a little scent in your products

I personally like the scent of the original toner so I wouldn't mind repurchasing it. I think the real question is whether both of them work the same or not. Read on to find out!

WHERE TO BUY
This product comes in a 180ml bottle and costs USD21.99 (~RM85)on Wishtrend. It's the same price as the original one, and although the original version is available in different K-beauty websites now, the unscented version is only currently available on Wishtrend + Klairs' own website (as far as I know)

PACKAGING
The bottle is pretty big in my opinion. Most toners go for 100ml/150ml sizes, but the fact that this toner has 180ml gave me a good impression at first to be honest haha. I just like it when a product is affordable + has a lot of product ya know?

Compared to the original bottle, this one comes with a metallic cap, a transparent bottle + purple labeling. I love anything purple right now because hello it's the year of Ultraviolet! 🤣 I just could not find any faults in terms of packaging, presentation, and aesthetics.

The product comes sealed, and the hole is pretty good at controlling flow. It doesn't all just drip down, and you actually have to shake/squeeze to get more product out. I like this because then I get to control how much product I use.

INGREDIENTS
As I mentioned, this product does not contain any essential oils and fragrances. These are the essential oils included in the original toner that were removed in the unscented version:

The original toner has a total of 34 ingredients while the new unscented version only has 29. All the ingredients in the unscented version have an EWG rating of 0-3, meaning they're very unlikely to cause irritation. It contains no parabens, no sulfates and no alcohol.

After screening the ingredients, the unscented toner has the same notable effects and ingredients as the original toner.  Aside for ingredients that help to moisturize the skin (Beta-glucan, Hyaluronic acid, & Polyquaternium-52), it also has ingredients that help fight acne (Licorice Root Extract), brighten the skin (Licorice Root Extract & Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate), promote wound healing (Panthenol & Centella Asiatica extract) as well as help with anti-aging (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate).

TEXTURE + FRAGRANCE
The texture of the toner is slightly thick, but not as thick as Pyunkang Yul's essence toner. It's still light enough to be absorbed quickly into the skin, but it does have a bit of viscosity to it.

There is no scent but the lack of smell kinda reminds me of how hospitals smell clean and sterile haha.

HOW TO USE
In line with Althea's Bare Essentials movement, I've been using less and less products in my skincare routine. I usually just cleanse, toner, use a serum then finish with a moisturizer. Sometimes I add in a mask at night.

I've been pairing this with the All Over Lotion as well, and I think both of them are really good at providing moisture + locking it in your skin.

MY REVIEW + VERDICT
I've stuck to it ever since I got it and I don't think I'll stop using it anytime soon. It works exactly like the original one (minus the scent) and I think Klairs has perfected the "toner for everyone". I think literally everyone can use this toner and you won't have any irritation/adverse effects.

For my personal experience, I find it hydrating + good at removing excess dead skin cells. When I have small pimples/open wounds it does not sting and after cleansing my face I find that my skin feels nice and soothed.

I used this as a mask as well by soaking some cotton pads and leaving it on my face for 10 minutes. It's not the best mas out there, but it did leave my skin cool and plump. When I patted in 2-3 drops of the toner into my skin, I find that it's even more plumping, so you can definitely use this as an essence as well.

WILL I REPURCHASE?
To be honest, I prefer products with scents so I would probably get the original toner over the unscented toner. I like how clean it feels when I apply the unscented one because it feels more "sterile" if you know what I mean. I do like the concept of it and how Klairs wants to cater to everyone, so I think for that they have to be applauded.

Packaging & ingredients were a 100% yes for me as well, and I can't really say anything bad about this product because it does what it says it will + it looks good. I recommend people with acne or sensitive skin to give this toner a go if you're looking for something to add to you basic skincare routine.
