Macallum Connoisseurs Coffee Company

September 4, 2015

Hello everyone! Today I'll be posting episode two of EROS & FUFY CAFE HOPPING! This time we went to Macallum Connoisseurs Coffee Company! For this episode, Fufy and I were joined by Kevin and Bella (aka BEVIN!). Gerald was supposed to join us but he couldn't make it :(

Macallum Connoisseurs opened this year (2015) and so far from all the reviews I've read online, it's quite popular. I pass by the building every time I ride the bus to Sungai Nibong and at first I thought it was a fancy factory (I didn't really give it a second glance). After seeing all the nice pictures on Instagram, Fufy and I decided to put it on our list of cafes to visit!

ADDRESS

No 1, Gat Lebuh Macallum, George Town, 10300 Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Opening Hours: 9AM to 12AM Everyday

The building is located on the side of the highway but there's enough parking space outside and enough tables inside as well. The place is quite big and if I were to describe it in one word, it would be INSTAGRAMMABLE. The place looks like a factory that's been modified into a cafe. As soon as you enter the double glass doors, you'll be greeted by the counter which doubles as the place where they make the drinks.

There's this one nice wall that's perfect for taking OOTD shots on the left side of the building as well.

Macallum Connoisseurs is not just a cafe but an academy as well. Aside from having lots of space for customers, they also have a Sensory Station and a Roasting Room (I think that's what its called). There are two platforms above accessible through stairs at either side of the building which I believe is used for events.

At the time we went, they had a good variety of cakes that they were selling from RM13-14. Secret Recipe is cheaper but for the size and quality of the cakes I would say that it's not bad.

I took photos of the menu but they turned out overexposed, so here are some taken by Fufy. (Click on photos to expand)

And from here onward are the food porn shots!

I got the Beef Meat Ball Bolognese and the Good Ol' Bagel. Fufy and I shared the Salted Caramel Macadamia Cheese. I didn't order any drinks because my budget was only RM30, but Macallum provides free drinking water so it was okay.

Beef Meat Ball Bolognese | RM18

The portion wasn't very big or very small, and I would say the portion was just right. I can personally eat a lot of pasta so portion size matters to me. Some cafes have very small portions that leave me still feeling hungry, but Macallum's Bolognese paired with the bagel I ordered made me super satisfied with my meal. Also, I don't like bolognese pastas that are very sour, thin and wet because of the fresh tomatoes used, but I liked how the sauce was not too watery and not too sour as well. The meatballs were nice as well.

I would say that this pasta was okay and that it was worth it. I shall give it a rating of 3/5 because Bella's balls were bigger (I shall get to that later) and my mum's bolognese is still better hahaha.

Good Ol' Bagel | RM7

You basically get a poppy seed bagel and you can choose your spread: either cream cheese, orange marmalade, butter or apricot jam. I went with cream cheese and this combo paired with the pasta really made me full. They gave a generous amount of cream cheese as well.

I would say that this bagel was worth it because of the amount, the quality and the price. If you wanted to take a nice table photo, more food = better. This only costs RM7 so it's great for adding more elements to your table. Plus it tastes great. The next time I come I shall try the orange marmalade.

PS. I'll give this bagel 3.5/5!

Salted Caramel Macadamia Cheese | RM13

I thought that this was a cheese cake at first but after a closer look, I found that it was actually a crepe cake. I tried this green tea crepe cake at Bar91 once and it was nice, but it was dry. This cake was creamy and when you slice into it its cream just oozes out. There's a lot of nuts in it and I have to say I was in cake heaven! The salter caramel was perfect and they were generous with the macadamia as well. The only bad thing about this cake is that I found the crepe layers a bit too thin.

I would rate this cake 4/5!

Next I'll be going through what Fufy, Bella and Kevin had.

Creamy de Pesto with Smoked Salmon | RM26

Fufy had this and it was shooo good! As you can see, the portion is quite big and they were generous with the salmon as well. The presentation was great and I can't find anything wrong with this pasta. Definitely getting it next time!

Fufy said the pasta was just right: not too much, not too little. She found it just right and said that you won't get tired of the pesto taste even though the sauce is creamy.

I'd rate this a 4/5 (not a 5 because I didn't have the whole plate to myself hahaha. Next time!

Piccolo Latte | RM8

I didn't get to snap a solo photo of this, but Fufy got a Piccolo Latte. I tried it and it was okay. I didn't find anything special about it to be honest.

Pork Ball Bolognese | RM18

Bella got the pork ball version of the pasta I ordered and the only different thing between them are the meat balls. We exchanged balls (lol) and hers was bigger and tastier (lol again). If I were to choose between them, I'd definitely get the pork one.

Bella said she found the sauce too much and that it was more saucy than creamy, but that the portion was generous. To each her own I guess.

I shall rate this 3.8/5!

Breakfast Bagel | RM8

Kevin was actually planning to eat afterwards but after eating this he said he was full already, so I guess that this bagel is quite filling! The bagel comes with their house cream cheese already inside it and with a side of scrambled eggs. The eggs were very fluffy and I would say the best part about it is that it only cost RM8!

I'll give this a rating of 3.5/5.

Tiramisu Crepes | RM13

Bevin also shared this cake. Compared to the salted cheese macadamia, this one was a lot less creamier and easier to eat. The coffee flavor isn't very overwhelming and I found it okay.

Bella said that the cake was okay. It wasn't perfect but the piece was big and generous.

I would rate this a 3.5/5.

And that's it! The prices are okay. I wouldn't say say that it's pocket friendly for everyday meals, but for once in a while gatherings or day outs, the food, portions, prices and atmosphere are all worth it.

I definitely enjoyed taking photos of the food. As you may or may not know, I have photography as one of my classes this sem and it was fun to play with the ISO, aperture and shutter speed. I got a few overexposed photos but after toggling the settings I managed to get it right ^^

(Yes, Fufy and I took a million photos before eating)

OOTD

For this lunch I wore this denim jacket I got at one of the shops at Tesco for RM39. The quality is okay and its a good enough alternative to the RM100 denim jacket at H&M. The only down sides about this jacket is that the pocket insides tore (but can be fixed easily) and that it's not branded. Telling myself that it's okay because that extra RM60 can be used for so much more.

These candid photos were taken by Bella ^^
Kinda felt happy cuz my skin looks so much better than it did a year ago!

I also bought these nice maroon leatherette shoes from H&M! They cost me RM100 and they are my alternative to the Dr. Martens boots/shoes that I have been eyeing for the longest time. I was actually planning on getting the boots/shoes by the end of this year (either I get it myself or I ask my mum to buy it for me), but it dawned on me that if I DO get the RM500/800 shoes, I won't actually wear them out often because I'll be too scared to damage them. For the meantime, I'm satisfied with these shoes and I'll get the Dr. Martens in the future. I keep on telling myself to stop looking at branded stuff but its so hard T.T

The H&M shoes are actually not half bad. The quality is great and they look awesome as well. I didn't get the boots because they only had size 36 left and the one I got was the only stock left, so might as well get it before I regret it (ooh I rhymed).

Fufy helped me take OOTD shots and I wanna take more in the future because I wanna get rid of the awkwardness of being the one posing.

We also went to Tan Jetty so I got some shots there as well.

And that's all for this post! Afterwards I did some window shopping with Fufy (I practically live in H&M now)

Another selfie the night before hahaha
She's wearing this mustard sweater and I swear I need to find one too. I've been feeling this need for a mustard sweater for a few weeks now and Fufy got one a few days back and I is jealoussssss. Why does H&M have my maroon sweater in every colour in the rainbow except for yellow???!!!

PS. We had pretzels for dinner~

I shall end this post with a nice edited photo of me:
